Loose cannon Trump gets the hump over travel warnings

Donald Trump: GQ
Japan, Canada and Uruguay are among the countries to have issued travel warnings to their citizens about the dangers they may face in the United States.

With gun violence endemic and a president who seems incapable of doing anything about it, those countries and others have urged caution when visiting the US.

There have been more than 250 mass shootings in the US this year. Last weekend, mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, left more than 30 people dead.

New Zealand's SafeTravel website warns its citizens to "exercise increased caution" in the United States due to the threat of terrorism.

Japan warned of “the potential for gunfire incidents everywhere in the United States”, and described the country as a “gun society”.

Uruguay told its citizens to be aware of “growing indiscriminate violence, mostly for hate crimes”.

Now US President Donald Trump has threatened retaliation against those nations brave enough to tell the truth.
He threatened undefined retaliation against countries and organizations that issue travel warning against the US.

"If they did that, we'd just reciprocate," Trump said. "We are a very reciprocal nation with me as the head. When somebody does something negative to us in terms of a country, we do it to them.

"Look, our country has been taken advantage of by foreign countries, even allies –including allies, and in many cases, more than anybody else. We’ve been taken advantage of for many, many years, and it stops. It stopped.”

Amnesty International and a growing list of countries have begun issuing warnings about travel to the United States because of gun violence.  Warnings, which are of varying degrees of intensity, have come from a list of countries that also include Venezuela, Germany and Ireland.

Amnesty International said: "Depending on the traveler's gender identity, race, country of origin, ethnic background, or sexual orientation, they may be at higher risk of being targeted with gun violence, and should plan accordingly."

Australia's smarttraveller.com.au warns: "The United States has more violent crime than Australia, although it rarely involves tourists. Shootings, including mass shootings, can occur in public places."

Trump did not specify any particular country in his threats, or say what he might do to retaliate.
