Meet The Nai Harn, probably the best gourmet destination in Phuket

Phuket's first five-star beach hotel, The Nai Harn, is a "must visit" destination for food and wine lovers visiting the beautiful Thai island.

The resort has undergone a complete refurbishment and offers luxury accommodation overlooking one of Phuket's finest beaches on the southern tip of the island.

Laze on a day bed from your private balcony, overlooking the Andaman Sea, or indulge in a range of eateries and bars, including the new Hansha open-air restaurant – Phuket's first rooftop and sea-view sushi and sashimi bar.

Integrated into the hotel’s Reflections rooftop lounge, Hansha overlooks the azure blue waters of Nai Harn Bay. Think dishes featuring tuna, Hokkaido scallop, octopus, roasted eel, kingfish, surf clam, red snapper and shrimp.

But Hansha is just one of several gourmet attractions within the spectacular resort.

Cosmo Restaurant (below), with its impressive spread of international flavours (and spectacular buffet breakfasts), as well as “Taste of the South of Thailand” specials, has just launched a new menu.

Executive chef Mark Jones draws on 20 years of experience in Michelin starred restaurants and five-star luxury resorts to create an eclectic culinary journey for food lovers, with dishes that focus on the freshest and finest ingredients from sustainable sources.

"All the local seafood comes from Rawai gypsy fishing village located only 3km from the resort. The fishermen there use small day boats, catching only what they are able to sell and delivering to us up to twice a day," says Jones.  Meanwhile, most fruit and vegetables are sourced from the local farmers in Phuket, Chumpon, Hua Hin and Phang Nga provinces.

A special menu section has been added catering specifically to "wellness conscious" diners, with no fat, dairy or cheese used in the dishes and a focus on raw ingredients and tasty nutritional meals high in vitamins, minerals, with proven curative properties.

“Healthy food should also feed the soul and in the new menu we use a wide range of beneficial ingredients, but always with a core philosophy that every dish should taste great,” says Jones.

General manager Frank Grassmann, himself a wine and food lover, says: “With a passion for quality ingredients, outstanding flavours and the absolute best in culinary creativity, we are taking resort dining to a whole new level at The Nai Harm and the new menu at Cosmo demonstrates our ongoing commitment to provide the finest gourmet experience on Phuket.”

The resort is also home to chic Rock Salt restaurant (below), located on rocks overlooking the water with a menu that takes diners on a diverse culinary journey through Eastern Mediterranean and North African cuisine, but can also offer dishes as simple as moules meuniere or freshly grilled local fish served with a chilli sauce.

The wine list for The Nair Harn is selected exclusively by international expert James Suckling and features an excellent range of rosés that are perfect for summer refreshment, as well as a selection of locally-influenced cocktails.

Rock Salt specialities include oyster platters, grilled meats and seafood from the charcoal barbecue.

The Nai Harn is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World group and its staff are absolutely outstanding. The resort offers an intoxicating blend of romance, adventure and indulgence and my wife said it was her favourite Thai destination.

The most historic hotel in Phuket offers all the luxuries like a spa and cooking school as well as the chance to take a luxury speedboat to James Bond Island, while staying in a suite that was occupied by Roger Moore or Christopher Lee during the filming of The Man with the Golden Gun.
