Why settle for a hotel room when you can enjoy an apartment?

Some hotel rooms are a little cramped.  OK, let's be honest. Some hotel rooms are little better than a cupboard with a bed.

Which can be fine if you are on a budget, or simply need somewhere no frills for a night, or two.

If, however, you are staying somewhere for a few days; want to spread your stuff out, maybe have a meeting or two or just want more space, then a serviced apartment can make a lot of sense - and save you money into the bargain.

Particularly so if your choose somewhere like Fraser Suites Sydney, where you get apartment-sized accommodation with all the luxuries you'd expect in a five-star hotel.

That means a full-service 24-hous front desk, swimming pool, massive gym, rooms that are serviced every day, room service meals and an on-site restaurant service an excellent buffet breakfast.

I stayed with Fraser Suites this week, in a 38th-floor apartment with some pretty awesome views. The apartment was well situated on Kent Street, between Town Hall and Chinatown, with an impressive array of restaurants and bars within strolling distance.

It was spotless with thoughtful little touches like L'Occitane amenities in the bathroom, big fluffy towels and a well-stocked mini bar.

I'm told there is a range of studios, apartments and penthouses in the complex, all within walking distance from Hyde Park, Darling Harbour and stores like Myer and David Jones.

The 42-level tower has a striking foyer featuring a spectacular rainfall chandelier and was designed by acclaimed British architect Sir Norman Foster.

My apartment felt shiny and modern, with cutting edge technology (the iPod dock had the iPhone 6 plug), along with attractive artworks and custom-designed furniture. There were plenty of power points and the wifi was free and fast. That's terrific with prices starting from just $256 a night - less than half that of the rack rate of some top Sydney hotels.

There are some 201 suites in all, with a pair of two-level duplex penthouses the top of the range.

To wind down there is that 20-metre swimming pool, a spa and a gym with lots of bewildering-looking equipment. I was impressed but not tempted.

Fraser Suites Sydney also has two dedicated conference and business floors.

All apartments contain LCD TV with plenty of cable channels, including all the Sky Sports channels, a bedroom with either a king or queen bed, full-length opening windows (yay, fresh air), work desks, docking station, washing and drying facilities (except for the studios) and Nespresso coffee machines.

What didn't I like? Well, the child that screamed and ranted in the breakfast room while its parents looked benignly on did not thrill me - but only the parents can be blamed for that.

Overall, I was very satisfied and will be considering served apartments for longer-term stays.

Fraser Suites Sydney is at 488 Kent Street, Sydney NSW 2000.
