Cabbages and Condoms. Yes, it is a restaurant

Cabbages and Condoms is a most unlikely name for a restaurant - but it is one of the best-known eateries in Bangkok and sends a powerful message along with its spicy food.

Given its name it is no wonder this well-priced eatery, with both outdoor and indoor dining options, has attracted a lot of attention.

Conveniently located just off Sukhumvit Road, C&C is popular among both local and foreign clients for its fun ambience and idiosyncrasies - including pointing fun at local politicians.

The restaurant was conceived to promote better understanding and acceptance of family planning and to generate income to support various development activities of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA).

Cabbages and Condoms was started by a much-loved public official called Mechai Viravaidya, who decided to try and improve the lives of Thai people by highlighting a wide range of social issues such as sexual health, sustainability and anti-corruption.

The restaurant boasts that its food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy.

In addition to the restaurant, there are various displays with the safe-sex message and a handicraft shop selling souvenirs. The restaurant is decorated with condoms from all over the world.

We sat outside for an excellent lunch of Mien Khum, a traditional dish of shrimp, peanuts and ginger, coconut, chilli and shallots wrapped in wild betel leaves.

This was followed by Gang Phed Ped Yang (hot and sweet roasted duck cooked in coconut milk and green pepper) and a Thai beef salad with a surfeit of green vegetables.

The food was spicy without being overpowering (clearly attuned to the palates of tourists) - and the service excellent. Highly recommended, with starters priced at around $4 and mains at around $8-10. It is open daily from 11am-11pm.
