Geelong gets a serious wine venue that's lots of fun

Jon Helmer has two decades of experience in the wine business and he realises a long-time dream by opening the Geelong Cellar Door in the burgeoning Little Malop Street precinct this week.

Having been given a sneak peek, I can confirm that this is the wine bar that every city wishes it has.

The list covers every winery in the Geelong/Bellarine region (making it an ideal stop for visitors), as well as a cleverly curated selection of interlopers from around Australia and the world.

There are around a dozen wines available by the glass and guests can choose any wine from the retail shelves and pay $10 corkage to enjoy it in the warm, clubby but female-friendly atmosphere.

There is also a "guest" winery - at the moment Best's Great Western, currently celebrating their 150th anniversary.

Names like Bannockburn, Clyde Park, Lethbridge and Scotchman's Hill line-up alongside boutique producers like Spence Wines, Livewire and Hildegard for a complete snapshot of the Geelong region.

The food is largely charcuterie and cheese platters - of excellent quality - and there is a wood fire to keep drinkers warm in winter, a long table for meetings, classes and tastings and an outdoor seating area on the way in time for summer.

For those wanting more substantial meals, Helmer plans to allow patrons to bring in dishes from neighboring eateries.

The Geelong Wine Cellar is the style of wine bar I wish I had on my doorstep. It is well worth a journey.
